Conor Oberst - I Don’t Want To Die (In The Hospital)
Words: Paul Hobbs
There have been many pretenders to the mantel of ‘21st Century Bob Dylan’, but none have laid claim quite so convincingly as Bright Eyes. Conor Oberst, the man behind the pseudonym, has seemingly dropped the experimentalism of previous records and continues his trip through Americana as per his last effort Cassadaga.
His content inevitably aims to be affecting with a hint of politicism, but Jerry Lewis piano battering and frantic, repetitive vocals make the track one that can be missed. The repetition of ‘Help me get my boots on’ is as dangerously close to direct Dylan lyricism as Razorlight’s recent ‘creation’ of ‘she lives on disillusion row’. Johnny Borrell has always measured himself against the greats without warrant or merit, but Oberst is truly capable of far greater. Where his work behind the Bright Eyes curtain can at times be timeless and uniquely brilliant, this retrospective to 1960’s protest sounds distinctly aged.
