School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms
3.5/5
Words: Matt Young
The trio making up School Of Seven Bells have a slightly incestuous history leading up to this current release. Ben Curtis was previously a founder of Secret Machines whilst twin sisters Claudia and Alejandra Deheza are both former members of On! Air! Library!. Both bands criminally underrated and byproducts of a cliquey 'psyche/prog' scene. Fast forward twelve months - the twins have split with On! Air! Library!. Curtis leaves Secret Machines to pursue his own music. Step forward Prefuse 73 - glitchcore hip-hop-ist - to work with Curtis on a single Class Of 73 Bells. Prefuse (Guillermo Scott Herren) who has a son with Claudia Deheza and who play together in A Cloud Mireya, is a catalyst for the trio rekindling friendships and they gravitate toward each other to form SOSB creating their own highly rhythmic, laptop mysticism. The lilting vocals from the girls wistfully weaving amongst the reverb and beats.
Alpinism brings to fruition the band’s songwriting over the last year and they have created a lush album, mixing the ethereal My Cabal and Sempiternal/Amaranth with genuine pop moments like Prince Of Peace, Half Asleep and iamundernodiguise. There's a sense of freedom and aspiration, otherworldliness and warmth which belies the music's electronic non-organic origins.
