Mirror Mirror - The Society For The Advancement Of Inflammatory Consciousness
3.5/5
Words: Ewan McIntyre
Like some long forgotten prog/psych outfit, Mirror Mirror emerge blinking into the harsh light of 2008. Depending on which way you look at it, they’re either thirty years too late, or just in time. Perhaps we need to believe that love is indeed the law, although The Seahorses did little to convince me of that proposition back in 1997. But in the cynical times in which we live, where’s the harm in a bit of acid-soaked sloganeering? As MM state their goal is to create ‘cosmic, erotic ecstasy’, and who could argue with that?
But it’s not all love and peace. Like Love, they mix dazed euphoria with the dark underbelly of psychedelia on Don Coyote's Confession, where they sing “You are the sun, but now you’ve gone, I’m thinking of buying a gun”.
In fact, it’s far too simple to pigeonhole Mirror Mirror as a prog revivalist outfit. There are some great pop moments on here as well. Eugene sounds like The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, which in my eyes is always a great thing.
Despite some of the lyrics evoking the hilarious 18 inch Stonehenge scene in Spinal Tap, there’s enough going on here to make this an arresting and interesting trip.
